Undergraduate Grants, Fellowships & Financial Aid

Undergraduate students should examine the following websites for information on scholarships and financial aid at Portland State University:

University Studies Mentor Program-- PSU Students who seek genuine teaching experience should apply to the Mentor Programs. Peer (undergraduate) mentors assist instructors in Freshman Inquiry courses. All mentors receive in-state tuition and a monthly stipend. For more information on mentors, see the University Studies website. AAA Student Travel Grants-- The Academically-Controlled Auxiliary Activities Fund provides grants of up to $1000 for any single request, $1250 for any one individual per year, or $4000 for any one department or organization. The fund supports educational, aesthetic, and institutional activities which have the potential of contributing to the experiences and development of a number of students. Examples of activities supported by AAA include on-campus conferences in which students directly participate, developmental activities of academically oriented clubs and organizations, and some auxiliary support for gust lectures and artistic presentations. Diversity Recognition Scholarship for Freshman-- A specific goal of the Diversity Recognition Scholarship is to expand and enrich Portland State's learning environment by recognizing and supporting outstanding students from many cultures, ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds, and with diverse talents, interests, and life experiences. For the freshman award, graduating high school seniors and others with less than 30 college credits must meet regular admissions requirements and hold U.S. citizenship or permanent residency status. Priority to students who are Oregon residents, have financial need as defined by federal guidelines, are first generation college students, and who will contribute to the campus diversity goals. Each scholarship provides partial to full remission of instructional fees for three to 15 terms. Students are provided with academic support services and are required to complete at least 12 credits per term and maintain a 2.50+ college GPA. Diversity Recognition Scholarship for College 30+-- A specific goal of the Diversity Recognition Scholarship is to expand and enrich Portland State's learning environment by recognizing and supporting outstanding students from many cultures, ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds, and with diverse talents, interests, and life experiences. To be eligible to apply students must have: earned 30 or more college credits with an overall cumulative college GPA of 2.50 and U.S. citizenship or permanent residency status. Priority given to students who are Oregon residents, have financial need as defined by federal guidelines, are first generation college students, and who will contribute to the campus' diversity goals. Each scholarship provides partial to full remission of resident instructional fees for three to nine terms. Students receive academic support services and must complete at least 12 credits per term, maintaining a 2.50+ GPA for scholarship renewal. Graduate Grants, Fellowships & Financial Aid

Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program-- The Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program is funded by a four-year $800,000 grant from the US Department of Education. Portland State University contributes $277,551 in cost share funds over the same four-year period. This program is designed to help selected college students complete there bachelors, enroll in and graduate from PhD programs. For more information regarding the Ronald E. Diversity Program in Neuroscience (DPN; Predoctoral and Postdoctoral)-- The DPN, funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, supports the training of research scientists in neuroscience. The goal of the DPN is to increase the number of ethnic minorities in neuroscience who complete the doctorate in neuroscience and who conduct research in areas of important to the NIMH.

Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services Fellowship (MHSAS)--The Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services Fellowship (MHSAS), funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA), supports the training of mental health service providers or practitioners, or those who will provide services in the field of substance abuse treatment or substance abuse prevention. There is also a Postdoctoral Fellowship in MHSAS available.

American Educational Research Association-- The American Educational Research Association (AERA), founded in 1916, is concerned with improving the educational process by encouraging scholarly inquiry related to education and by promoting the dissemination and practical application of research results. AAA Minority Dissertation Fellowship--The American Anthropological Association invites minority doctoral candidates in anthropology to apply for a dissertation writing fellowship of $10,000. The annual AAA Minority Dissertation Fellowship is intended to encourage members of ethnic minorities to complete doctoral degrees in anthropology, thereby increasing diversity in the discipline and/or promoting research on issues of concern among minority populations. Dissertation topics in all areas of the discipline are welcome. Doctoral students who require financial assistance to complete the write-up phase of the dissertation are urged to apply. American Association of University Women--One of the world's largest sources of funding exclusively for graduate women, the AAUW Educational Foundation supports aspiring scholars around the globe, teachers and activists in local communities, women at critical stages of their careers, and those pursuing professions where women are underrepresented. NSF Minority Postdoctoral Research Fellowships and Supporting Activities --The Directorate for Biological Sciences (BIO) and the Directorate for Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences (SBE) offer Minority Postdoctoral Research Fellowships and related supporting activities in an effort to increase the participation of underrepresented groups in selected areas of science in the U.S. These fellowships support training and research at the postdoctoral level in a host institution in the areas of biology and social, behavioral, and economic sciences supported by NSF. Supporting activities are travel grants to graduate students to visit prospective sponsors, starter research grants for Fellows, and an annual meeting of Fellows and their mentors. American Psychological Association-- Offers the opportunity for postgraduate women and ethnic minorities to be trained by Albert Ellis and the senior staff while carrying a diverse caseload of individual clients and participating in special seminars and ongoing clinical research. Applicant must have a doctorate in psychology or counseling or an MSW or MD degree. Those nearing completion of their dissertation are also qualified. Congressional Black Caucus Foundation-- The Congressional Fellows Program is CBCF's premier leadership development program for persons with graduate or professional degrees. The congressional office placement component of the program affords Fellows the opportunity to gain invaluable experience and insight as they assist in the development of legislative and public policy initiatives while working as congressional staff. Fellows work 40 hours per week on a range of staff assignments including, but not limited to, conducting research and analysis, responding to constituent mail, drafting legislation, and coordinating logistics and public testimony for congressional hearings. In some instances, Fellows are also placed in the offices of federal agencies or public policy institutes during the summer. This supplemental experience illuminates how such agencies interface with Congress and affords Fellows with new opportunities to apply the knowledge and skills learned on Capitol Hill. Consortium for a Strong Minority Presence at Liberal Arts Colleges Fellowships--Intended for scholars who have completed all the requirements for the Ph.D. or the M.F.A. except the dissertations; this fellowship program is intended for scholars in the final stage of their dissertations and aims, above all, to help the fellow complete the final requirements for the degree during the year of residency. Each host institution provides a salary for the CSMP Fellow commensurate with the salary of a full-time visiting faculty member with comparable qualifications. Modest funds will be made available to finance proposed research, subject to the usual institutional procedures. Scholars will be expected to teach one semester course (or the equivalent), to participate in functions such as departmental seminars, and to interact regularly with students. Soloman R. Guggenheim Museum: Summer Internship for Diversity in the Museum Profession-- Annual program to enable graduate students, (recent graduates and undergraduates as well) to supplement their course work with practical museum training in arts administration, art history, conservation, education, film and media studies and museum studies. Typically unpaid, but some stipends are available for enrolled graduate students. For more information regarding this fellowship click here.


SUNY Underrepresented Graduate Fellowship Program--The State University of New York (SUNY) sponsors the Underrepresented Graduate Fellowship Program (UGFP) to recruit, enroll and retain students who have been historically underrepresented in SUNY’s graduate and professional programs. The fellowship award is tuition, fees and a stipend. Students are eligible if they are U.S. citizens or permanent residents and from one or more of the following groups: African American, Hispanic/Latino, and Native American. Applicants must be admitted to a graduate program and be able to study full time to be considered for this fellowship.For more information regarding this fellowship click here.

The Five College Fellowship for Minority Students--The Five College Fellowship Program is offering minority scholars a year in residence at one of five campuses for doctoral students who are ABD. The Five Colleges, Incorporated in Western Massachusetts and include Amherst, Mount Holyoke and Smith colleges and the University of Massachusetts Amherst. The program is intended to promote diversity in the academy by enabling more scholars of under-represented populations to embark on an academic career with their doctoral degree completed. College of Liberal Arts & Sciences

Scholarships-- Thanks to the generosity of alumni, faculty and friends, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences awards a significant number of undergraduate and graduate scholarships. These scholarships are awarded through the student’s major department. Application deadlines are usually eight months to one year BEFORE the scholarship is awarded. Most deadlines occur in the academic year during fall term or early in winter term and require a significant amount of work on the part of the applicant. PSU Bookstore Scholarship

PSU Bookstore Book Scholarship-- The Portland State University Bookstore Book Scholarship will assist students in purchasing textbooks and supplies from the PSU Bookstore to facilitate their educational goals during spring and summer terms 2006.  The Bookstore offers 30 to 60 awards of $250 to $750. The awards are based on financial need as determined by the FAFSA and a statement of financial need. Early return of scholarship applications will be given priority.
